The dissemination of what’s important to the world is too significant a task to be left to algorithms and popularity contests. Jason Kottke, whose reputation as the winner of many popularity contests is well-earned by go-to nuggets like this one. Nicely put.

Reads nicely as a piece of short verse:

WE’RE CLOSED

About 6:00 or 6:30,
occasionally about 5:00 or 6:00,
sometimes as late as 8:00 or 9:00

Some days or afternoons I’m not here at all, and
lately I’ve been here just about all the time,
except when I am someplace else, but I should
be here then, too.

Idea: Random Wiki Story

Open 4 or more browser tabs, and load a Random Wikipedia Page in each
Read (at least) the introduction for each article
Make notes and think about connections, characters, and conflicts
Write a one page fiction story inspired by the articles

I’d originally done the tab thing as a way to try and learn something new and esoteric each day. But most times I do it, I find myself unintentionally making a story out of the random articles. Which seemed insane until I had this other idea.

Anyhow, might inspire me to try a bit of fiction, just for fun. If nothing else it seems like a nice warm-up exercise to nimble up the fingers and the brain.
